At least 3,000 delegates are attending this year’s event, lower than the 3,500 who came for the 20th PAC, which was also held here, in 2007.

“Because of the economic crunch, we don’t expect to surpass our previous record of attendees or generate huge profits. But we do expect to have a more relevant ad congress this year,” Margot Torres, 21st PAC chair, told reporters during Wednesday’s briefing before the congress formally opened here.

She said the organizers agreed to give the proceeds of the Araw Awards, the meeting’s highlight in recognition of the country’s best advertising campaigns, to the Baguio chapter of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

“Now it is not just about the economy, but the environment. That prompted us to add more speakers relevant to the topic,” she said.

Torres said the congress theme, “Perspective (Ano Sa Tingin Mo?)” was conceived because of the global economic crisis.

Torres said the scheduled PAC activities this year were meant to give delegates “fun and relevant learning.”

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — In the wake of strong typhoons that battered the country over the past months, organizers of the 21st Philippine Advertising Congress (PAC) this year have focused on how the industry can help the victims and honor those who have responded to meet their needs.

Fernando Zobel de Ayala, president of the Ayala Group of Companies and 21st PAC honorary chair, said advertising presented a huge potential to “inform, engage and serve the public good.”

Torres said experts would tackle social networking, the role of digital technology in advertising, corporate social responsibility and climate change in the panel discussions.

The plenary session today features John Naisbitt, author of the best-selling book, “Megatrends,” who will discuss emerging trends following the global meltdown. He will also launch a book about China.

The sponsors of the PAC, she said, also pledged to donate advertisements to the PNRC Baguio.

Baguio, which is celebrating its centennial this year, hosted the PAC in 2003. The summer capital lost the PAC this year after typhoons in October triggered landslides and floods that damaged roads leading to the city.

Torres said the series of typhoons had not only forced the congress organizers to transfer the venue from Baguio City to Subic, but spurred the advertising industry into action.

Hermione made her way slowly to the bench and sank down on it, putting her heavy bag and a stack of folders beside her. Coming there had become a tradition, and she almost looked forward to it every day as the busy work-day came to an end. It was a nice change from the noisy city and an even noisier ministry.
